FLYERS INTER
SQUAD GAME REPORT: TEAM WHITE VS TEAM BLACK
Aug. 27, 2009 -
M.Morin -
Staff Writer
Tonight
at the Sioux Lookout Memorial Arena, Team White, coached by Doug
Lawrance met Team Black, coached by Les Wills, in a close fast paced
contest that saw the defense play solidly as the shooters tried to
find the range. All
four goalies were tested and found equal to the task.
In
the first period, Team Whites first goalie Jordan Giguère was
responsible with the puck drawing it in from danger on several
occasions, and flashed the leather stopping a shot from the blue
line. On defense A.J Wensley was joined by Troy Dumais, Darnell
Ferland, Geo Pascal, and Bentley Kakekayash.
Ferland was a creditable stay at home defenseman.
Troy Dumais had an excellent game displaying the hallmarks
of the offensive defenseman with good hits, stick handling and
coast to coast rushes with scoring opportunities.
On the other side of the ice, Team Blacks defense was
equally impressive, with spineramas and good offensive chances by
Clayton Lewis, solid play by Kalan Ewald, and crushing hits by
Stefan Bruyere. You
just do not get by him without paying the price.
With 1:32 remaining in the First period, Colten Brule found
the back of the net for Team White.
Intensity
increased in period 2, when Team Black mounted an offensive charge
with sharp shooters Brad Bienvenu, Will Kinsman and Alex Riveness
peppering the net with the latter ringing one off the post.
At 10: 46 Shayne Kakegamic and Alex Riveness set up Kalan
Ewald for the tying goal. Goalie,
Zach Lake performed well while his team was on a penalty kill,
including a nice pad save on Brad Bienvenu’s wrist shot.
Momentum shifted back to Team White as goalie Mitch Donnelly
took up duties in the cage. He repelled a total of eight shots,
including, a slider from Adam Wensley, a lightening wrist shot off
the stick of Alex Beaulne , and a mad scramble in the crease..He
was equal to the task as the period ended tied 1-1.
Now
this was serious. The pace picked up period three, when A.J.
Wensley’s long pass to his brother Adam resulted in a good
scoring opportunity. The constant see-saw between the forwards and
defense continued as Troy Dumais steered shooter Alex Riveness into
the corner. Logan McDonnell would end up being the hero for Team
White as he scored at 14.51 assisted by Matyjanka, Brule, and
Ferland. The dying minutes of the game saw Team Black on a man
advantage, unleash a
flury of shots on goalie Zach Lake, who stood tall in the net to preserve the win. Final
score: Team White 2 Team Black 1

Sioux Flyers Training Camp -
Day 3
M.Morin -
Staff Writer
Competition,
was the key word today at the Woodlands Arena in Vermillion
Bay as 40 hockey players: many of them veterans from last year and
many hopefuls fight for the right to don the Flyers jersey for the
2009-2010 campaign. On
this the third day of the camp there was still a lot of fight and
spirit left in these guys as they demonstrated their skills in a
fast skating, hard hitting environment.
“ Session by session, these players are starting to
realize that they are fighting for jobs”, said
Head Coach and GM Randy Lulashnyk.
“It’s friend against friend, brother against brother out
there”, he continued. Case
in point, the Wensley brothers engaging in a spirited tilt, one
among three fights of the morning session.
But can these guys play hockey? That is what Coach Lulashnyk
wanted to find out as he put them through a series of scrimmages
and competitive drills.
In the first scrimmage at 2:00 p.m. Team White took to the
ice against Team Black in a close hard fought affair.
Returning stars shone brightly, as Captain, Brad Bienvenu,
put on the jets, displaying speed, agility and leadership on and
off the ice. Defenseman A.J. Wensley, whose possession of the puck
seems to automatically control the pace of a game, is back.
Will Kinsman, was in the mix dishing out several good hits,
as did Brad Mailman. David Novak was solid in the net.
Among local players, former
Q.E.D.H.S. Warrior, Blake Moore, showed a good work ethic, blocking
shots, and earning scoring chances. Veteran player, Ian Alcock, was
a speedy and physical presence on the ice, including a bout with
Adam Wensley, who apparently was not done fighting yet. Nelson
Rosiak moved the puck really well, making no mistake and scoring on
a breakaway pass. D.H.S
product, goalie
Zack
Lake
displayed excellent physical fitness and versatility in the net.
In an interesting
line combination with a North Western Flavour, Ignace’s Ryan
Watkins, Dryden’s Brent Lundy and the
North
Shore
’s Cole Saunders displayed speed, good passing and puck control.
Major off-season
acquisition from the Diesels, Clayton Lewis, did not disappoint, as
he totally deked out a defenseman, and then placed the puck in the
net. Another acquiree, Justin Pache from
Winnipeg
, played a gritty game, combining with Nelson Rosiak and Adam
Wensley in an effective forward line.
Among the Newcomers, Colten Brulé, product of
Alberta
, distinguished himself on the ice by skating swiftly, working in
the corners and driving hard to the net.
Goalie Jordan Giguère, from the Montréal area, came up
big. He snapped the glove, and snagged a blistering A.J. Wensly
shot from the blueline. Geo
Pascal, from Inuvik, clear winner of bout #2 in scrimmage 1,
combined with local Shayne Kakegamic, and
Minnesota
product Alex Riveness, and Clayton Lewis in a good transition game
and attack. Defenseman
Troy Dumais showed good passing and shooting skills, along with a
physical edge. Special
mention goes to # 10 Riveness whose size and speed earned him at
least 2 breakaways on net.
Also showing a great desire to make the Team, was #14 Eric
Eronen, with good breakout passes and a fight.
The Northern Community of Big Trout Lake was well
represented by #15
Clinton Morris previusly of the Toronto Team Canada Moose. As
well, # 18 Kenny
Quequish, scored on a breakaway playing alongside # 17 Lance
Moskataywnene.
The Coach wound up the afternoon session with a spirited
scoring competition between Teams Black and White.
#10
Logan
McDonnell could be seen effortlessly completing the many push-ups
and sit-ups in final exercises…and this after three days of Camp.
That guy must work out or something.
Looks like a good Flyers Team for the upcoming season.
A
full inter-squad Hockey Game will take place at 7:30 p.m. on
Thursday, August 27th at the Sioux Lookout Memorial
Arena. Two mystery coaches will be on hand to guide Flyers Team
Black and Team White.
Come out for some
good Flyers Hockey Action.

INUVIK - Geo Pascal knew his opportunity to play top-tier junior
hockey would come again, and he would be ready for it.
Two years after being cut from a junior
hockey team tryout in Creston, B.C., the 17-year-old will now be
suiting up for the Junior A-division Sioux Lookout Flyers in
August.

A-division Sioux Lookout Flyers. - Andrew Rankin/NNSL

"It feels pretty good," he said.
"I'm pretty excited and have tried to work hard."
The D-man's break came while playing at the
National Aboriginal Hockey Championships in Winnipeg early last
month. Flyers head coach and general manager Randy Lulashnyk was in
attendance and was so impressed with the Samuel Hearne Secondary
School student's play he summoned Pascal from the dressing room
after the game and invited him to training camp.
Pascal has had several invites from other
junior teams, but went with the Northern Ontario-based squad where
he thought he could flourish as a player.
He missed out on his first junior hockey
opportunity because he said he arrived at camp out out of shape.
The experience left a bitter taste in his mouth and he has since
taken nothing for granted, changing his diet while adopting a
strict workout regime. On most days, he hits the gym twice a day.
A standout local player who's played in every
league or tournament possible, he is already looking beyond Junior
A to Major Junior hockey and then the National Hockey League.
"Why not? I'm going to work for
it," he said.
Lulashnyk said the soft-spoken teenager has
all the skills necessary to be a great hockey player and thinks he
has the work ethic to match.
"What I saw I really liked. He really
stood out, which is why I want to work with the young man and
hopefully get him in a higher level of hockey when it's all over.
"He has the right character. He's got
that determination. He's got the will. I'm hoping that's what he
bring here and that he'll do whatever it takes to succeed."
Pascal is quick to acknowledge the enormous
support he's gotten from his local mentors such as his dad as well
as coaches Michael Gravel, Dave Halpine and his sponsors.
He hopes to be a mentor to other youth in the
North, proving NWT athletes are on par with others in the country.
"We don't have as much
competition," he said. "But we have a lot of great
athletes that could be really great players if given the
opportunity."
His long-time linemate Paden Lennie, 17, has
teamed up with Pascal in high school and minor hockey league play
as well as at the National Aboriginal Hockey Championships. He has
no doubt his good friend will succeed, even though Lennie was a
little surprised he got such a sweet offer.
"I knew he could make it that far,"
said Lennie. "He's a great player with a lot of strength and
speed and he knows where to be. He doesn't get mad. He just keeps
trying. I'm sure he can make the NHL. He's very focused and he can
get what he wants."

The Sioux Lookout Flyers have
bolstered their forward lines as they have acquired the Hockey
Canada playing rights of forward Logan McDonnell from the Fort
Frances Sabres of the SIJHL. Logan had 2 goals in 8 playoff games
last season. Logan spent the last two seasons in the SIJHL with the
Fort Frances Sabres. At 6'1" and 185 lbs, “Logan can create
room for his line with his physical presence and drives the net
hard”, says Head Coach Randy Lulashnyk. Logan is from Atikokan,
ON and the Flyers organization would like to welcome Logan to Sioux
Lookout.
The Sioux Lookout Flyers are pleased to announce the signing of
2 veteran players from last year. Ian Alcock and Shayne Kakegamic
have been signed by the Flyers for the 2009/2010 season. Both Ian
and Shayne have been working hard off the ice since the previous
season has ended. Shayne and Ian have set the bar high for what is
expected from returning players and rookies coming to camp.
Ian Alcock, a forward/defensemen is 5’9“ and wore the “A”
for the Sioux Flyers last year winning the Most Improved Player.
Ian was born April 11, 1990 and played 49 games with 3 goals and 7
assists.
Shayne Kakegamic, a gutsy forward is 5’10” and 160 lbs born
April 24, 1989 from Sioux Lookout, ON. Shane had 5 goals and 6
assists with 70 minutes in penalties last season. Shayne won the
Most Valuable Player for the Flyers in the 2008-09 season.

JEFFREY BIENVENUE # 10 MAKES
FLYERS PROUD
M.Morin -
Staff Writer
The Sioux Lookout Flyers Jr. A Hockey Club is
pleased to
announce that Jeffrey Bienvenue #10 is joining the 2009 NCAA
Division lll Hockey Champs, the Neumann Knights. Bienvenue had just
completed his first season with the Flyers and recorded 14 goals
and 11 assists in 16 games in the SIJHL. The 5’7”, 175 lbs
forward from Vegreville, AB will be a welcomed addition and a “go
to guy” for the NCAA Division Hockey Champs, the Neumann Knights.
The Sioux Lookout Flyers organization is proud of the strong
relationship that Coach Randy Lulashnyk has with Neuman University.
The Sioux Lookout Flyers Hockey Club would like to congratulate
Jeffrey and his family on fulfillment of his dream.
 |
When a hockey
player celebrates his team mates goals as much or more than his
own, you know you’ve got yourself a keeper. Such was the
case when Jeffrey Bienvenue, of Vegreville
Alberta
, answered the call, and joined his cousin, Team Captain, Brad
Bienvenu and the Flyers in a game against the Dryden Ice Dogs on
January 2, 2009. Even in the warm-up as he
cradled the disk in his stick, switched seamlessly to his backhand,
and flipped it into the net, it was evident that here was a
special player-one who could almost make the puck talk. Winning
many face-offs in the game #10 was a factor in the Flyers first
win. He would go on to become a leading player for the Flyers
culminating in his dominant five point game-three goals 2 assists,
and Flyers Team victory in a game against the Fort Frances Junior
Sabres on January 27. Jeffrey cemented his status as a star
player, when he scored two goals in just 26 seconds, in a
game versus the Fort William North Stars on March 8, in Sioux
Lookout. |
This caliber of
play, will be useful with the Neumann College Knights his new team,
who upset the #1 ranked, Plattsburgh State 5-4 in OT, in the
quarter-finals on their way to the 4-1 Division III National
Championship win over Gustavus Adolphus in Lake Placid, New
York. Jeffrey is a fitting candidate to attend
Neumann
College
, in Aston
Pennsylvania
, an educational institution dedicated to community service
in the Franciscan tradition, which emphasizes respect for
individuals, concern for the environment, and social
responsibility. Aston is only 10 miles from Philadelphia.
|
Indeed, Off-ice, #
10 did a good job of representing his team and adopted community.
Speaking at the Annual Banquet, Jeffrey gave credit to his billet
family, his Flyers team mates, and Coaching staff for being part of
his future in hockey. Candidly he spoke of refocusing his life’s
goals with the help and guidance of the coaching staff.
In a classy letter
to Head Coach and General Manager, Randy Lulashnyk, Jeffrey was
thankful for the opportunity, and acknowledged the contribution of
the entire team and coaching staff to his success, promising to
keep in touch and offering to play a future role with the Flyers
organization.
|
 |
In a typical
display of generosity Bienvenue wrote, “ …I had an
absolute blast with each and every one of you”. We all
congratulate Jeffrey on the wonderful opportunity he has
earned. As he joins other SIJHL compatriots at the college
level in the U S of A we look forward to his continued success in
his hockey and educational careers. Your success is our
success.
Again, this is
absolutely huge for Jeffrey and his team mates, Randy Lulashnyk and
the coaching staff, the Flyers organization, and the community of
Sioux Lookout.
Note: Jeff had offers from 4 other Universities and Colleges
such as, Lebanon Valley College, Iowa State University, Buffalo State
University and New Westminster College
