POWER FORWARD DARREN TURNER COMMITS TO NORTHLAND COLLEGE
July 20, 2010: M & M. Morin, Staff Writers.

Darren Turner's loyalty and skills were rewarded recently when he enrolled at Northland College in Ashland, Wisconsin, where he joins team mate Nathan Brown and several other SIJHL alumni on the Northland Lumberjacks Hockey team. Returning to play for his former coach Randy Lulashnyk, in late November 09, from the Upper Canada Patriots of the CCHL, the offensive threat soon contributed to the Flyer's attack. The Sioux Lookout Flyers organization and fans thank him for the added grit, experience and role model he provided to our team. We wish him well in his future hockey and educational endeavours.

Darren demonstrated his value in his first game with the orange and black when his laser shot from the high slot beat Emery glove side and the crowd erupted. He was assisted by Chase Dobranski's pass to the point which was coolly relayed to the slot by Clayton Lewis. The Flyers earned a point from the powerful Ice Dogs that night.
In the physical play department Darren did not disappoint. On December 4th, he played an inspired game versus the K&A Wolverines with frequent rushes alongside his team mates and a devastating hip check. Some hockey players from his new home in Wisconsin will remember his checks as he excelled in that aspect in an early January game against the visiting Mustangs.

Special Teams was another responsibility of the yeoman 20 year old Turner. A February 13th overtime 3-2 thriller against his former team the Ice Dogs was a case in point. On that occasion, after short hand chances by Brad Bienvenu and Nathan Brown, he combined with star forward Gale Matyjanka on a two on one short-handed rush and followed up with a blocked shot. He contributed greatly to the Flyer's Penalty Kill.

Number 21's most memorable performance for the Flyers came in a game against the league leading Fort William North Stars. He scored from his knees, roofing it past the Fort William goal tender, to give the Flyer's a 5-3 lead in an exciting victory, the first against the storied Stars on Sioux Lookout ice. This play exemplified his leadership and mature self control as his line mates and the Flyers benefitted from his experience and coolness under fire.

Darren was a constant positive role model to his team mates. The examples of his dynamic play will continue to pay dividends in the strides of upcoming young players such as Sioux Lookout's Alex Beaulne, and Nelson Rosiak. As well, Sioux Flyer's veteran 20 year old, Ian Alcock, will also benefit in observing his developing role as a statesman of the game. Returning former team mates will draw inspiration from him as they along with new acquisitions, take this franchise to the next level.

At the Flyer's wind up banquet, Darren modestly stated that he did not know where it would lead in his hockey future but he had returned to play hockey for his former coach. We think you have your answer now as you have earned this opportunity to pursue your goals. (pun intended.)

Again the community of Sioux Lookout, the Flyers Organization, coaching staff, players, volunteers and fans wish you the best of Northern Ontario luck. We'll be following your progress as you join other SIJHL alumni to don the skates for the Northland Lumberjacks of Ashland, Wisconsin. Who knows? Maybe there will be a Canuck line on that team which will spread our fame and fortune far and wide.

VERSATILE FLYER CLAYTON LEWIS, TO PLAY FOR BUFFALO STATE BENGALS
M. Morin, Staff Writer,  May - 2010

“Good food, good music and good people,” was how Reno Nevada`s, Clayton Lewis summed up his appreciation, speaking for his team mates, at the first Sioux Lookout Flyers Potluck supper back in September.  The rushing defenseman’s power of succinct observation, and quick action, translated well on the ice as his clutch play frequently made the difference to his adopted Hometown Flyers Junior “A” Hockey Team.

The Flyers and their fans congratulate Clayton, on his acceptance at Buffalo State College, State University of New York which offers 151 undergraduate programs with 11 honors options and 60 opportunities for graduate study. More than 60 countries participate in Buffalo State and SUNY's international education program.

On ice Clayton `will play hockey for the Buffalo State Bengals at the NCAA Division III Level.  The Bengals bounced back from a tough first half of the season, to a great start in 2010 winning three of their first four games. This included two offensive outbursts 7-3 and 6-1 over Franklin Pierce on January 8th and 9th.   Lewis brings his considerable skills to his new Team next year.

Last season, Flyer`s number 7, Clayton Lewis, was a force on the blue line delivering a multi faceted game, displaying rapid acceleration, excellent penalty killing and a knack for earning important points.  Opposition snipers will remember his hits as he was a wall at the blue line. He was also dangerous on the offence.

One case in point of his value happened as Lewis tied the game at three versus the Fort Frances Lakers on Dec. 3rd.

One of his great achievements, occurred on December 7th  at the Sioux Lookout Memorial Arena, when Clayton assisted on the game tying goal in the all important shoot-out win against the Flyer`s regional arch-rivals the Ice Dogs.  The fans were ecstatic.

On February 18th, in one of the most well crafted individual efforts of the Flyer`s season, Clayton zoomed into the Ice Dog’s zone, deked two players and then flipped a backhand shot past the Dryden netminder.

With the final game of the regular season on the line, the veteran Flyer’s defenseman shifted into high gear. His power play goal with 2:51 left in the final frame electrified the crowd and ended the season on a winning note against the Fort Frances Lakers.

The Flyers organization, supporters and volunteers, wish to express their thanks to Clayton for representing their Team and Town well both on and off the ice.  Good Luck Clayton! Sioux Lookout will be following your progress with pride.

Flyers accept grant, will become tobacco-free
Shayla Cybulski, Sioux Lookout Bulletin STAFF WRITER
http://www.siouxbulletin.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderfiles/bulletin_05_19_2010.pdf

The Sioux Lookout Flyers Jr. A Hockey Club has been selected as recipient of a provincial grant, thanks to their pledge to be tobacco-free. The Ministry of Health Promotion recently granted Play, Live, Be Tobacco Free (PLBTF) funding to assist nonprofit sports teams and organizations. PLBTF offers up to $500 in funding to assist these teams and organizations to develop and implement a tobacco-free policy.
“It was an opportunity presented with this initiative,” commented Flyers President Doug Lawrance. “We thought it meshed well with the team. It was a good match.” The Flyers have committed to having a tobacco-free policy in place by the end of July.
Lawrance said the club has yet to draft up the policy, however, he can say that the policy will follow PLBTF’s rules. “We’ll be complying with their requirements,” he said. PLBTF is a collaborative effort, consisting of public health, sport and nonprofit organizations that support local, regional and national decision makers in developing tobacco-free policies in sports and recreation.
According to PLBTF, tobacco-free sport and recreation means that everyone taking part in a sport or recreational activity, be it participants, volunteers, officials, coaches, leaders or spectators does not smoke, snuff, dip or chew tobacco while involved in a sport or recreation activity.
“By pledging to be tobacco-free, the players and coaches associated with this hockey club are incredible role models for young athletes in our area,” said Christine McLeod, Health Promoter with the Northwestern Health Unit.
“The use of tobacco industry products during sport and recreation is an issue that is becoming a serious concern across Ontario. Everyone involved in sport and recreation should have the opportunity to be physically active in a healthy and safe environment.
A second round of applications for the grant is now open, with a submission deadline of May 21. Any non-profit organization dealing in sport or recreation can apply, and grants are awarded based on how applicants intend to adopt, endorse and promote their policy while supporting and educating members about living a tobacco  free lifestyle.
For more information, visit PLBTF’s website at playlivebetobaccofree.ca.

NATHAN BROWN TO PLAY FOR NORTHLAND COLLEGE LUMBER JACKS

M. Morin, Staff Writer, April 30th 2010

Nathan Brown is a compact, affable Canadian kid with a ready smile, who plays the game of hockey like a player twice his size. He brings a lot to the game and in return the game smiled on him and his future as he recently accepted a placing with the Northland College Lumber Jacks, at the NCAA Division III level, of the Mid-West Collegiate Hockey Association.

Northland College is a coeducational liberal arts College in Ashland, Wisconsin.  It began existence as the North Wisconsin Academy in 1892 and the College was setup in 1906.  An historic and integral part of the Northern regions it occupies, the College has many classes that deal with environmental studies as well as courses on Native American history, language, and culture.  Their fans, faculty and students are in for a treat as they welcome the 5’9, 175 lb dynamo to their Hockey Team.

Nathan was the definition of a complete hockey player in his season with the Sioux Lookout Flyers of the SIJHL.

·         He finished tied for first in regular season points for Sioux Lookout (41 Points),

·          displayed  a gritty physical presence on the ice,

·         used his blazing speed to draw penalties.

With the game on the line he was the guy you wanted to take the faceoff, and he frequently figured in the game winning play.

On February sixth against the Fort Frances Lakers, the Flyer’s forward put his explosive speed to good use charging down the ice and drawing a tripping penalty.  The crowning example of Brown’s physical play was one of his most famous hits as he stepped into a Wolverines sniper at full speed at the blue-line.

Nathan’s first standout performance came on October third against the K and A Wolverines. The veteran Flyer’s forward earned three points including the game winner in overtime to notch a 5-4 win on home ice. It was the first of many classic games between these two rivals.

On December seventh against the powerful Dryden Ice Dogs, Nathan’s faceoff skills and clutch scoring were on full display.  He scored to tie the game at three in the third period and won consecutive draws during OT.  The Sioux Lookout Flyers prevailed 4-3 in a shootout win before appreciative hometown fans at the Sioux Lookout Memorial Arena.

Brown will be joining a Northland College Lumber Jacks squad that overcame a tough first half to make the playoffs.  Showing a lot of improvement in the 2010 portion of the regular season, the Lumber Jacks lost only one game during a four game stretch.  Northland College were close to the .500 mark with three wins and one tie in their last eight regular season matchups.

Brown is not the first graduate from the SIJHL to suit up for the Lumber Jacks as their line up featured four players that have previously played in our league:  Colin McIntosh, Nick Doiron, and Shaun Newman from the Dryden Ice Dogs as well as Nick Matson who played for the Marathon Renegades. Both Colin and Nick were solid offensively with twenty four and twenty points respectively for the Lumber Jacks during the regular season.

The Sioux Lookout Flyers organization: Coaching Staff, team mates, and all their fans are very proud of Nathan and wish him the best of luck both on the ice and in the classroom as he pursues this excellent opportunity.

Lumber Jack Fans! Stand by to be thrilled this fall by this exciting hockey player.
